Welcome to another episode of the Health for the Spirit, Soul, and Body Blog from Doxa Missions. Today, we're looking at "Guided Steps: Be the Person God Blesses."
As believers, we often desire God’s blessing in our lives, but what does it truly mean to walk in His favor? One powerful principle to understand is that the steps of a good person are guided by God. This idea of being led by God isn’t just for big decisions or life-changing moments, but also about the small, everyday choices that align us with His will.
Let’s look at what it means to take those faith-filled steps and allow God to lead us on the journey He has set before us.
The Steps of a Good Person Are Guided by God
In Psalm 37:23, we read, “The steps of a good man are directed and established by the Lord when He delights in his way [and He busies Himself with his every step].” (Psalm 37:23, Amplified Bible). This verse gives us a beautiful image of how closely God is involved in the lives of His people. He is not a distant observer but an active guide, establishing and directing our paths.
The key here is that God delights in the way of the good man—one whose heart is aligned with His. This alignment happens when we seek God and submit our will to His, allowing Him to lead us step by step. But what does that look like in practical terms?
Guided Steps: Step Forward in Faith
God’s guidance often requires us to step out in faith, even when we don’t have the whole picture. Many believers mistakenly expect God to reveal His entire plan for their lives in one grand moment. While God may indeed give us visions or a sense of purpose, the reality is that His will for our lives is usually revealed incrementally, one step at a time.
Imagine someone praying about whether God wants them to serve as a missionary in a far away location for the rest of their life. Instead of waiting for a clear, long-term answer, God might simply be guiding them to serve in a local ministry first, to take small steps that build their faith. Through these small steps, God often shapes our path without us even realizing it.
God’s will is to lead you on a day-to-day basis. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." (KJV) Our job is not to figure everything out, but to trust God and follow where He leads. Sometimes, the first step is the hardest, but it's often the most important one.
Learning to Listen for God's Guidance
How do we begin to hear and follow God's leading in our everyday lives? First, we must learn to tune our ears to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (KJV). The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to every believer, given to guide us in truth and direct our paths.
However, to hear His voice, we need to cultivate an environment where we can listen. Spending time in prayer and in God’s Word is essential. The more we familiarize ourselves with His voice through Scripture, the easier it will become to recognize His promptings in our daily lives.
Maybe you already sense God’s leading in some area of your life. He might be prompting you to make a specific change, pursue a new direction, or even step out of your comfort zone. Don’t ignore that still, small voice. It may not always make sense in the moment, but remember, God’s perspective is far greater than ours.
Obedience in the Small Things
One of the most important lessons we can learn is that God’s guidance often starts with the small things. Too often, we look for God to make sweeping changes in our lives, but He usually begins by asking us to take small, manageable steps of obedience.
Consider Luke 16:10, where Jesus says, “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.” (KJV). If we want God to trust us with bigger things, we first need to be faithful in the smaller things He’s calling us to do today. It could be something as simple as reaching out to a friend, serving in a ministry, or making time for daily devotion.
By obeying God in the little things, we build trust in His guidance. Over time, those small acts of faith accumulate, leading to significant transformations in our lives.
Trusting God's Plan, Even When We Don’t Understand
One of the hardest aspects of walking by faith is following God’s leading when we don’t fully understand the path ahead. But trusting God means believing that He knows what’s best for us, even when it doesn’t make sense in the moment.
Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (KJV). When we remember that God’s ways are higher than ours, it becomes easier to trust Him with every step, knowing that He sees the bigger picture.
As you seek God’s guidance, be prepared for His answers to sometimes challenge your understanding or plans. The key is to remain obedient, even when the steps seem unclear or daunting.
One Step at a Time
God’s desire is to lead you, not just in the major decisions of life, but in the everyday steps that bring you closer to Him. When we surrender our own ambitions and desires, allowing Him to lead, we discover that He is already involved in the details of our lives.
So take that first step forward in faith today. Whether it’s a small change or a significant decision, trust that God is guiding your every move. As you walk in obedience to His voice, He will begin to change your life—one step at a time.
